Enchanting Creations from Kernow: My Needle-Felted Fairies and Witches

Living here in the far southwest of Cornwall, I’m surrounded by cliffs, coves, and legends that inspire my craft every day. When I sit down with wool and needle, I feel as though I’m tapping into the same magic that runs through our folklore. Fairies and witches are my favourite figures to make — they carry the spirit of Cornwall in every fibre.

I’ve always loved the old tales of Cornish piskies and knockers, those mischievous little folk said to live in mines and moors. When I make a fairy, I imagine her drifting through the hedgerows or dancing on the cliffs.

 My Fairies

  • I choose seafoam greens and sky blues to echo the coast.
  • I add wildflower colours — pink campion, yellow gorse — to capture the lanes in spring.
  • For wings, I keep the wool light and airy, like sea spray carried on the wind at Land’s End

My Witches

Cornwall has its share of witch stories too — wise women with herbs, enchantresses by the sea. When I felt a witch, I think of those tales.

  • I give her a cloak in stormy greys or deep ocean blues.
  • Her hat is always a little crooked, as if it’s been battered by Atlantic gales.
  • For broomsticks, I love using driftwood I’ve found on the beach — it feels properly Cornish.
